Elements and Performance Criteria
- Carry out admission procedures
- Prepare theatre for dental surgery
- Prepare patient for dental surgery under the direction and supervision of the surgeon
- Identify anatomy and physiology as it relates to dental health procedures
- Comply with WHS, infection control and animal welfare requirements related to dental health procedures
- Apply specific anaesthetic procedures under supervision of veterinarian
- Assist with pre-operative medications
- Position patient and apply restraints
- Examine endotracheal tube to ensure it is functioning and apply pharyngeal pack
- Prepare specific materials and anticipate veterinarians' requirements
- Prepare specific dental materials for the scheduled procedure
- Anticipate progress of surgery and respond to veterinarian's requirements
- Hand instruments, equipment and materials to the veterinarian as requested
- Provide specific dental surgical support
- Take and maintain record of procedure
- Dispose of clinical and other hazardous waste appropriately
- Clean, store and maintain dental instruments and equipment
- Communicate with client and discharge patient
